Degrees of separation
Separation is measured by a breadth-first search outward from the mainline
through parent, child, and spouse links:

| 0 | Mainline (protagonists + ancestors) |
| 1 | Spouses and siblings of mainline |
| 2 | Their spouses, children, siblings |
| 3+ | Each further step |
People with higher separation are shown with progressively lower opacity,
so the most relevant people stand out visually.
This view is helpful for deciding which branches to prune or hide when
simplifying a large tree.
